UTTAR PRADESH: A Siddharthnagar court in Uttar Pradesh has sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for murdering her husband within seven months of their love marriage. The court also imposed a โ‚น10,000 fine.

The District and Sessions Court convicted the wife under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, after examining the evidence.

The husband, an intermediate student, met the woman through Instagram. Their online friendship turned romantic, and the couple regularly shared reels on social media.

On March 12, 2024, they left their homes and travelled to Nepal. The woman's family filed a missing-person report. They later returned after the husband's family agreed to their marriage.

The couple registered their marriage on March 19, 2024, followed by a traditional wedding ceremony about a month later.

However, disputes reportedly arose over the wife's Instagram use and interactions with other people. The husband had reportedly objected to her social media activities.

On the night of October 2โ€“3, 2024, the marriage ended in a brutal murder inside their matrimonial home in Siddharthnagar.

According to the prosecution, the wife strangled her husband to death using a tie. She then called the police emergency number 112 and informed them about the killing.

When police arrived, the husband was found dead on his bed, with his hands tied behind his back. A tie was lying nearby, and bloodstains were visible on a pillow.

The husband's father stated that the wife had admitted to the police that she killed him in anger. The family had supported their love marriage and was unaware of any serious dispute that could explain the killing.

The deceased was his parents' only son. His mother also expressed grief over losing him to the woman their family had accepted as his wife.

Following the investigation, police filed a chargesheet. The prosecution stated that the trial was completed in approximately one year, six months and eighteen days.

After examining the evidence, the Sessions Court convicted the wife of murder under Section 103(1) BNS and sentenced her to life imprisonment with a โ‚น10,000 fine.

The prosecution further stated that 70% of the fine would be paid to the deceased husband's family. The order also provided an additional five years of imprisonment in default of payment.
